About SCAR

The Stonnall campaign About Roads group (SCAR) was formed in April 2005 from residents of the Stonnall area to initially to oppose the building of the proposed Brownhills Eastern Bypass. The mandate of SCAR has since been extended at the request of the village to emcompass all road-related matters in the Stonnall area.

The proposed bypass is one element of the Brownhills Transport package, designed by Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council to regenerate Brownhills town centre. Whilst SCAR and the people of Stonnall can support the proposal to regenerate Brownhills, the Eastern Bypass element cannot be supported due to the massive and uneccessary damage to the environment and loss of greenbelt the bypass would cause.

The group has received full support for the objection plans at several public meetings each attended by a significant number people.

In addition local people have attended several fund raising events, when further ongoing support has been given to SCAR. A petition containing c900 signatures including addresses of people who oppose the bypass has been handed in to government by Brian Jenkins our local MP, copies of which have been sent to all local councils.

A milestone for the SCAR group was the formation of the company limited by guarantee, this gives SCAR a formal structure and protects it's members. By becoming a member we can formally demonstrate that SCAR has the full support and backing of the villagers. Membership currently stands at just over 470, a fantastic acheivement of which we are grateful. However we cannot be complacent and we still still need to increase our membership numbers. Details for membership including the form which can be downloaded are available under the "Contact Us" tab from the home page, or contact any member of the SCAR group.

Further support and direction for the group has been given by Campaign to Protect Rural England, Friends of the Earth and various Councillors. Tamworth MP Brian Jenkins has also voiced his support of the SCAR campaign.

SCAR has also obtained good publicity for the campaign to object to the road and is regularly contacting officials concerned in this proposal and also to accelerate media coverage to widen awareness.

Stonnall is an old coaching village, situated near to Lichfield in Staffordshire and close to Aldridge, Brownhills and Sutton Coldfield. The proposed bypass will cut through prime agricultural and join the A461 and A452 near to the Stonnall village.
